DETC-MeSO-Taurine (DMT) is a preclinical small molecule neuroprotective agent being developed by CHS Pharma for the treatment of ischemic stroke. It is a derivative of S-methyl-N,N-diethylthiolcarbamate sulfoxide (DETC-MeSO), which is a known metabolite of the drug disulfiram, conjugated or associated with the amino acid taurine. DMT is designed to cross the blood-brain barrier and mitigate the secondary neuronal damage that occurs following an ischemic event and subsequent reperfusion. Its mechanism of action primarily involves the scavenging of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the reduction of oxidative stress, which helps to preserve neuronal integrity, reduce infarct volume, and improve functional outcomes in animal models of focal cerebral ischemia. Additionally, the compound may modulate neuroinflammatory responses and excitotoxic pathways associated with glutamate release.
