Overview

Detomidine is a synthetic imidazole derivative and potent α2-adrenoreceptor agonist used primarily as a sedative and analgesic in veterinary medicine, especially for horses. It produces dose-dependent sedation and superficial as well as visceral analgesia by activating α2-adrenoreceptors in the central nervous system, which leads to inhibition of sympathetic neurotransmitter release. This results in profound lethargy, increased pain threshold at the body surface, reduced sensitivity to environmental stimuli, bradycardia, and other cardiovascular effects. Detomidine is typically administered as its hydrochloride salt (detomidine hydrochloride) and is marketed under the brand name Dormosedan. It is approved for use in horses in the United States and also licensed for cattle use in Europe and Australia[1][2][3][4][5].
