Overview

TEV-50939 (deulevodopa) is an investigational small molecule and a deuterium-substituted analog of levodopa (L-DOPA), developed by Teva Pharmaceuticals for the treatment of Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders. As a prodrug, deulevodopa is converted into dopamine in the brain, thereby replenishing dopamine levels in the striatum to alleviate motor symptoms. The incorporation of deuterium into the levodopa molecule is designed to potentially improve its pharmacokinetic profile by slowing metabolic degradation, which may lead to more stable plasma concentrations and reduced motor fluctuations compared to standard levodopa. In clinical studies, it is typically co-administered with carbidopa, a peripheral DOPA decarboxylase inhibitor, to maximize central nervous system availability and minimize peripheral side effects.
