Overview

Deumitragynine (KUR-101) is a deuterated analogue of mitragynine, the major alkaloid found in kratom. It acts as an atypical μ-opioid receptor agonist and is being developed for the treatment of acute pain and opioid-related disorders, including opioid use disorder. The drug is orally administered and designed to improve upon the safety profile and metabolic stability of mitragynine through deuteration. Preclinical studies suggest it provides dose-dependent analgesic effects without significant respiratory depression at therapeutic doses. As of late 2022, KUR-101 was in phase 1 clinical trials for both acute pain and opioid-related disorders. The development effort is led by ATAI Life Sciences through its subsidiary Kures, which originated as a spinout from Columbia University[1][3][5].
