Overview

Deuterated alpha-linolenic acid (RT011) is a polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) in which the hydrogen atoms at the bis-allylic C11 position have been replaced with deuterium. This modification leverages the **Kinetic Isotope Effect (KIE)** to strengthen the carbon-deuterium bonds, making the molecule significantly more resistant to non-enzymatic lipid peroxidation. In neurodegenerative and retinal diseases, the accumulation of lipid peroxides and reactive aldehydes (such as 4-hydroxynonenal) triggers ferroptosis and protein aggregation. By incorporating into cellular membranes, deuterated linolenic acid prevents the self-sustaining chain reaction of lipid autoxidation, thereby protecting cells from oxidative damage and membrane disruption. It has been primarily developed for the treatment of ophthalmic conditions like dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and Stargardt disease, as well as broader neurodegenerative pathologies.
