Deuterated glucose is a form of glucose in which some or all of the hydrogen atoms are replaced with deuterium, a stable, non-radioactive isotope of hydrogen. This modification does not significantly alter the chemical properties of glucose but allows it to be distinguished from regular (protium-containing) glucose using certain analytical techniques. Deuterated glucose is primarily used as a metabolic imaging agent in research and clinical settings, particularly for deuterium metabolic imaging (DMI) via magnetic resonance spectroscopy. After administration, both the labeled parent compound and its metabolites can be detected by their unique spectroscopic signatures. This enables non-invasive assessment of tissue metabolism—especially useful for studying tumor metabolism, tumor burden, and response to therapy since many tumors metabolize glucose differently than normal tissues[1][5][6].
