Overview

Deuterated phenanthrene ([D10]Phe) is a stable isotope-labeled small molecule used as a non-carcinogenic surrogate biomarker to study the metabolic activation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in humans. Developed by the Masonic Cancer Center at the University of Minnesota, it serves as a tracer to model the metabolism of environmental carcinogens like benzo[a]pyrene, which are found in tobacco smoke. By measuring urinary metabolites such as [D10]phenanthrene tetraol ([D10]PheT) and [D10]phenanthrols ([D10]HOP), researchers can assess the impact of chemopreventive agents, such as glucobrassicin-rich Brussels sprouts, on PAH detoxification pathways. It is typically administered in microgram doses and is used to distinguish administered phenanthrene from environmental exposure.
