Overview

Deuteroporfin is a second-generation porphyrin-based photosensitizer developed by Shanghai Fudan-Zhangjiang Bio-Pharmaceutical for use in photodynamic therapy (PDT). It is primarily investigated for the treatment of advanced malignant solid tumors, including esophageal cancer, skin cancer, and cholangiocarcinoma. Following intravenous administration, the drug selectively accumulates in tumor tissues. When activated by laser light of a specific wavelength, deuteroporfin facilitates the conversion of molecular oxygen into reactive oxygen species (ROS), primarily singlet oxygen. These ROS induce localized oxidative stress, vascular damage, and subsequent tumor cell death through apoptosis and necrosis, while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. The drug is designed to provide a targeted therapeutic option for tumors that are accessible to laser illumination.
