When combined for peripheral or neuraxial nerve block procedures (e.g., interscalene block), this mixture has been shown to synergistically prolong the duration of sensory blockade and postoperative analgesia compared to single agents or placebo[1][3][7]. The combination may also reduce opioid requirements postoperatively. The safety profile appears acceptable based on current studies; however, caution should be exercised in patients with pre-existing heart disease due to potential cardiovascular effects from dexmedetomidine[4].
