Dexamethasone + fentanyl is a combination of two pharmaceutical agents used primarily in perioperative and postoperative settings to enhance analgesia and reduce opioid-related side effects. Dexamethasone is a synthetic glucocorticoid corticosteroid with potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressant properties, acting mainly by suppressing the release of inflammatory mediators and modulating immune responses. Fentanyl is a potent synthetic opioid analgesic that acts as an agonist at mu, delta, and kappa opioid receptors to provide strong pain relief. When used together, dexamethasone can reduce inflammation-induced pain and postoperative nausea/vomiting (PONV), while fentanyl provides rapid-onset analgesia. Clinical studies have shown that this combination can significantly improve pain control after surgery compared to fentanyl alone, decrease the required dose of opioids, lower pain scores, and reduce the incidence of PONV[2][6]. The combination may also attenuate stress hormone responses during surgery through interactive inhibitory effects on ACTH release[1].
