Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Dexamethasone + gentamicin + metronidazole is a triple-drug combination therapy utilized primarily in oral and maxillofacial surgery for the management of postoperative complications. Developed and extensively studied by institutions such as The Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University, this combination is typically applied locally to the extraction socket following the removal of mandibular impacted third molars. Dexamethasone, a potent synthetic glucocorticoid, serves to mitigate the inflammatory response, thereby reducing postoperative pain, edema, and trismus. Gentamicin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic, provides broad-spectrum bactericidal activity against aerobic gram-negative pathogens, while metronidazole, a nitroimidazole, specifically targets anaerobic bacteria that are common in the oral cavity and associated with alveolar osteitis (dry socket). The synergistic effect of these three agents aims to promote faster healing and minimize the incidence of infection and inflammatory complications.
