Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This is a combination of two agents: - **Dexamethasone** is a synthetic glucocorticoid corticosteroid with potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressant properties. It acts primarily by binding to the glucocorticoid receptor, modulating gene expression to suppress inflammation and immune responses. - **L-5-Hydroxytryptophan (L-5-HTP)** is an amino acid precursor to serotonin. It increases central nervous system serotonin synthesis by bypassing the rate-limiting step in tryptophan metabolism. When administered together, L-5-hydroxytryptophan can partially reverse or "escape" the suppression of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis hormones (such as ACTH and cortisol) induced by dexamethasone in individuals with major depression. This effect appears related to serotonergic stimulation overcoming glucocorticoid negative feedback on pituitary hormone secretion[1][2][3]. The combination has been studied mainly for neuroendocrine research purposes rather than as a marketed therapeutic product.
