Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Dexamethasone + nerve growth factor is a combination therapy investigated for the treatment of refractory sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) and unilateral sudden deafness. Dexamethasone is a potent synthetic glucocorticoid that exerts anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects, helping to reduce cochlear edema and improve microcirculation within the inner ear. Nerve growth factor (NGF) is a neurotrophic protein essential for the survival, maintenance, and repair of sensory neurons; in the context of hearing loss, it is intended to promote the recovery of damaged auditory nerve fibers and protect hair cells from further degeneration. The combination is typically administered via intratympanic injection to achieve high local concentrations in the inner ear while bypassing the blood-labyrinth barrier and minimizing systemic side effects. Clinical research led by Shenzhen Second People's Hospital has explored this regimen for patients who have failed initial systemic steroid therapy.
