Overview
dexamethasone + ondansetron + dimenhydrinate is a multimodal antiemetic combination therapy investigated for the prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). The regimen, studied by the Prince of Songkla University, involves the administration of dexamethasone (a synthetic glucocorticoid), ondansetron (a selective 5-HT3 receptor antagonist), and dimenhydrinate (an H1 receptor antagonist with anticholinergic properties). This triple-therapy approach aims to block multiple physiological pathways involved in the emetic reflex—specifically the inflammatory/glucocorticoid, serotonergic, and histaminergic/cholinergic pathways—to provide superior efficacy compared to single-agent or dual-agent prophylaxis in high-risk surgical patients, such as those undergoing ambulatory gynecologic laparoscopy.
