Overview

Dexamethasone + prochlorperazine is a combination antiemetic regimen used to control nausea and vomiting, particularly in patients receiving chemotherapy. Clinical trials have shown that while granisetron is more effective than this combination for moderately emetogenic chemotherapy, the addition of dexamethasone to prochlorperazine significantly improves patients' experience during chemotherapy. Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid that works by binding to the glucocorticoid receptor, inhibiting pro-inflammatory signals and promoting anti-inflammatory signals. Prochlorperazine is a phenothiazine derivative that acts by blocking dopamine receptors in the brain, specifically targeting the chemoreceptor trigger zone and vomiting center.
