Dexamethasone + tobramycin is a fixed-dose combination ophthalmic medication consisting of the synthetic corticosteroid dexamethasone and the aminoglycoside antibiotic tobramycin. This combination is indicated for steroid-responsive inflammatory ocular conditions where a bacterial infection exists or there is a high risk of infection. Dexamethasone provides potent anti-inflammatory action by inhibiting the release of inflammatory mediators and suppressing the immune response, while tobramycin offers broad-spectrum bactericidal activity against common ocular pathogens by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. In the context of the REPEX clinical trial conducted by Azienda USL Reggio Emilia - IRCCS, this combination was utilized as the standard postoperative treatment to manage inflammation and prevent infection in patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX) undergoing cataract surgery.
