Overview

Dexamethasone-cyclodextrin nanoparticle eye drops are a novel topical ophthalmic formulation developed by researchers at King Saud University for the treatment of posterior segment ocular diseases, specifically diabetic macular edema (DME). This formulation utilizes cyclodextrin-based nanoparticle technology to enhance the delivery of dexamethasone, a potent synthetic glucocorticoid, to the retina. By encapsulating the drug in cyclodextrin complexes that aggregate into nanoparticles, the technology significantly increases the solubility and permeability of dexamethasone across ocular barriers while minimizing systemic absorption and associated side effects. This approach aims to provide a non-invasive, topical alternative to traditional intravitreal injections for managing retinal inflammation and vascular permeability.
