Overview
Dexamethasone Durasert implant is a sustained-release drug-device combination product developed through a collaboration between Dr. Mark P. Figgie at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) and pSivida Corp. The system consists of a 5.0 mg dexamethasone core utilizing pSivida's Durasert technology, housed within an HSS-designed implantable screw. It is surgically implanted into the non-articulating region of the knee joint during an outpatient procedure. The device is engineered to provide a continuous, low-dose release of approximately 10 μg of dexamethasone per day for a duration of up to one year. This localized delivery aims to manage the inflammatory pathways associated with severe knee osteoarthritis, providing long-term analgesia and potentially delaying the requirement for total knee arthroplasty.
