Overview

Dexamethasone implant + ranibizumab refers to a therapeutic regimen or comparative study involving two established ophthalmic agents for the treatment of refractory diabetic macular edema (DME). The dexamethasone intravitreal implant (Ozurdex) is a biodegradable, sustained-release formulation of a potent synthetic glucocorticoid that reduces inflammation, vascular permeability, and the production of inflammatory cytokines by activating the glucocorticoid receptor. Ranibizumab (Lucentis) is a recombinant humanized monoclonal antibody fragment (Fab) that binds to and inhibits vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A), thereby preventing choroidal neovascularization and reducing macular edema. This specific combination or switch protocol is being investigated by Saglik Bilimleri Universitesi in patients who have shown an inadequate response to prior anti-VEGF therapy (specifically bevacizumab), aiming to evaluate the efficacy of switching to either a corticosteroid implant or a different anti-VEGF agent.
