Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Osurdex (commonly spelled Ozurdex) is a biodegradable, sustained-release intravitreal implant containing 0.7 mg of the potent corticosteroid dexamethasone. Formulated within the proprietary Novadur solid polymer drug delivery system, the implant is designed to release dexamethasone directly into the vitreous cavity over a period of up to six months, after which the poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) polymer matrix degrades into lactic acid and glycolic acid. Dexamethasone acts as a glucocorticoid receptor agonist, suppressing inflammation, reducing capillary permeability, and inhibiting the release of inflammatory cytokines and prostaglandins. Osurdex is approved for the treatment of macular edema secondary to central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) or branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO), diabetic macular edema (DME), and non-infectious uveitis affecting the posterior segment of the eye.
