Overview

Dexamethasone Parotid Irrigation is an investigational localized treatment approach for primary Sjögren's syndrome. Developed by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), the procedure involves the intraductal irrigation of the parotid glands with dexamethasone, a potent synthetic glucocorticoid. The treatment aims to reduce chronic inflammation within the salivary glands, thereby restoring or improving saliva production in patients experiencing severe xerostomia (dry mouth). By delivering the medication directly into the salivary ducts, the approach seeks to maximize local anti-inflammatory effects while minimizing the systemic side effects typically associated with oral or intravenous corticosteroid therapy.
