Overview

Dexamethasone sodium phosphate iontophoresis is an investigational drug-device combination therapy developed by Wake Forest University Health Sciences for the treatment of thick plaque psoriasis. The approach utilizes the Activapatch intellidose 2.5 device to deliver dexamethasone sodium phosphate, a potent corticosteroid, transdermally via a low-level electrical current (iontophoresis). This method is designed to enhance the penetration of the medication into dense psoriatic plaques while avoiding the systemic side effects typically associated with oral corticosteroid administration. Dexamethasone acts by binding to the glucocorticoid receptor, leading to a reduction in the inflammatory response within the skin lesions. The clinical development of this specific approach was explored in an Early Phase 1 trial (NCT03979664), which was ultimately withdrawn.
