This dexamethasone-eluting therapeutic contact lens drug delivery system (TCL-DDS) is an innovative ophthalmic treatment developed by the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. The system consists of a dexamethasone-polymer film, utilizing poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA), encapsulated within the periphery of a hydrogel-based contact lens. It is designed to provide sustained release of the corticosteroid dexamethasone over a period of approximately 7 days directly to the ocular surface. The primary indication is recurrent cystoid macular edema (CME), where it aims to reduce ocular inflammation by targeting inflammatory pathways. This delivery method serves as a potentially more patient-friendly and controlled alternative to traditional topical eye drops or invasive intravitreal injections.
