Overview

Dexbrompheniramine is a first-generation antihistamine of the alkylamine class with anticholinergic properties. It is the pharmacologically active dextrorotatory isomer of brompheniramine and is used to treat allergic conditions such as hay fever (allergic rhinitis), urticaria (hives), and other upper respiratory allergies. Dexbrompheniramine works by competitively binding to histamine H1 receptor on effector cells in the gastrointestinal tract, blood vessels, and respiratory tract. This blocks the action of endogenous histamine and provides temporary relief from symptoms like sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and runny nose caused by allergies or the common cold[1][2][4][7]. The drug has a half-life of approximately 25 hours and undergoes hepatic metabolism via cytochrome P450 enzymes[1][7].
