Dexbrompheniramine functions as a potent antagonist at the Histamine H1 receptor, effectively reducing allergic symptoms such as sneezing, rhinorrhea, and ocular pruritus. Pseudoephedrine acts primarily as an agonist at alpha-adrenergic receptors in the respiratory mucosa, inducing vasoconstriction that reduces swelling and nasal congestion. Historically marketed under the brand name Drixoral by Merck (following the acquisition of Schering-Plough), the combination was widely used for the symptomatic relief of the common cold and allergic rhinitis.
