Overview

Dexchlorpheniramine is a first-generation antihistamine and the S-enantiomer of chlorpheniramine. It acts as a competitive antagonist at histamine H1 receptors, blocking the effects of endogenous histamine and thereby reducing symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, itching, watery eyes, hives, rashes, and other allergic manifestations. In addition to its antihistaminic activity, it has anticholinergic (drying) and sedative properties. It is indicated for the treatment of allergic conditions including rhinitis (allergic and vasomotor), conjunctivitis due to allergies or colds, mild urticaria/angioedema, dermatographism (hives from scratching), reactions to blood/plasma transfusions as adjunctive therapy with epinephrine in anaphylaxis or severe allergic reactions[1][2][3][5][6].
