Overview

Dexelvucitabine is an investigational nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) that was developed for the treatment of HIV infection. It is a cytidine analogue designed to inhibit HIV-1 reverse transcriptase by incorporating into viral DNA and causing chain termination during viral replication. Dexelvucitabine showed antiviral activity in preclinical and early clinical studies but its development was discontinued due to concerns about toxicity, particularly lactic acidosis and hepatotoxicity. The drug was never approved for marketing.
