Overview
Dexlansoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to treat conditions associated with excessive stomach acid, including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, and heartburn in adults and children aged 12 years and older. It is the R-enantiomer of lansoprazole, providing a unique dual delayed-release formulation that allows for extended acid suppression and flexible dosing relative to meals. Dexlansoprazole works by irreversibly inhibiting the gastric H+,K+-ATPase enzyme system ("proton pump") in parietal cells of the stomach, thereby blocking the final step in gastric acid production[1][2][3][7]. This results in potent and long-lasting reduction of gastric acidity.
