Overview

The combination of dexmedetomidine and dexamethasone is an investigational therapy being evaluated for the prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). Dexmedetomidine is a highly selective alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist that provides sedative, analgesic, and antiemetic effects. Dexamethasone is a potent corticosteroid that exerts antiemetic properties by inhibiting inflammatory mediators and potentially interacting with various neurotransmitter receptors. This specific combination was studied in a randomized clinical trial (NCT02550795) led by Gachon University Gil Medical Center, specifically targeting female patients undergoing breast cancer surgery. The treatment involves a single intravenous dose administered prior to the conclusion of surgery to mitigate the high incidence of PONV associated with general anesthesia and surgical procedures.
