Overview
**Dexmedetomidine transdermal system** is an investigational sustained-release patch formulation of dexmedetomidine being developed by Teikoku Pharma USA for agitation associated with dementia of the Alzheimer's type. Dexmedetomidine is a small-molecule, selective alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist that reduces central sympathetic signaling and produces sedative and calming effects. The transdermal system is designed to provide continuous systemic delivery from a single patch application for up to four days. Teikoku Pharma USA is evaluating DMTS in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase 2 study in patients with Alzheimer's dementia and clinically significant agitation residing in care facilities.
