Overview

Dexmedetomidine + scopolamine is a combination of two pharmaceutical agents used together for their complementary sedative and anticholinergic properties. Dexmedetomidine is an alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist that provides sedation, anxiolysis, and some analgesia without significant respiratory depression. Scopolamine is an anticholinergic belladonna alkaloid that acts as a competitive antagonist at muscarinic acetylcholine receptors, reducing parasympathetic activity and preventing nausea and vomiting. This combination has been explored in multimodal sedation protocols, such as for the management of chronic insomnia or perioperative care, where enhanced sedation with reduced risk of postoperative nausea or vomiting may be desired[1][2][4]. The combined use increases the risk of central nervous system depression[1][2][3].
