Overview
DEXTENZA is a sustained-release, preservative-free ophthalmic insert containing 0.4 mg of dexamethasone, developed by Ocular Therapeutix. It is designed for intracanalicular delivery, where it is placed in the lacrimal punctum to provide a continuous dose of corticosteroid to the ocular surface for up to 30 days. The insert utilizes a biodegradable polyethylene glycol (PEG)-based hydrogel that resorbs and clears through the nasolacrimal duct, removing the need for manual removal. Dexamethasone, the active pharmaceutical ingredient, is a corticosteroid that acts as a glucocorticoid receptor agonist to suppress ocular inflammation and alleviate itching. DEXTENZA is FDA-approved for the treatment of ocular itching associated with allergic conjunctivitis, as well as for the treatment of ocular inflammation and pain following ophthalmic surgery.
