Dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) is a polyanionic derivative of the glucose polymer dextran, produced by esterification with chlorosulphonic acid. It is typically supplied as the sodium salt and characterized by its molecular weight and degree of sulfonation. DSS is highly hydrophilic and water-soluble, with a structure composed mainly of alpha-1,6 glycosidic linkages and minor branching at alpha-1,3 positions. In research settings, it is widely used to induce colitis in experimental animal models due to its ability to disrupt intestinal epithelial integrity when administered orally. Beyond this application, DSS serves as an anticoagulant in medical procedures to prevent blood clotting; as a dispersant or binding agent in pharmaceutical formulations; as an activator of lipoprotein lipase for dyslipidemia treatment; and as a skin conditioning agent in cosmetics for moisturizing effects and enhanced peripheral blood flow. It also finds use in protein purification processes intended for drug manufacturing[3][5][6][8].
