Dextriferron is an intravenous iron replacement therapy consisting of a complex of ferric hydroxide with partially hydrolyzed dextrin. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia when oral iron preparations are ineffective or cannot be used. In the context of acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding, it is used to accelerate hemoglobin recovery and improve quality of life by replenishing iron stores more rapidly than oral supplementation. The iron is released from the complex and utilized by the bone marrow for erythropoiesis. Clinical evaluations, such as those conducted at Aarhus Sygehus, have compared its efficacy against oral iron and no supplementation in patients treated endoscopically for gastrointestinal hemorrhage.
