Dextrin 2-sulfate (D2S) is a synthetic sulfated polysaccharide investigated primarily for its antiviral properties, especially as an inhibitor of HIV-1 infection. It acts by binding to cell surface proteins on activated human peripheral blood mononuclear cells and cultured T-cells, thereby blocking the entry and infection of HIV-1. Dextrin 2-sulfate demonstrated high anti-HIV-1 activity with low anticoagulant effects in preclinical studies. Its mechanism involves specific and saturable binding to target cell surfaces that are susceptible to HIV-1 infection[6][1]. The compound was explored as a potential microbicide for HIV prevention[1].
