Overview

Dextroamphetamine is the dextrorotatory enantiomer of amphetamine and acts as a potent central nervous system stimulant. It is primarily used in the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy. Dextroamphetamine increases synaptic concentrations of dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin by inhibiting or reversing their transporter proteins (dopamine transporter, norepinephrine transporter, serotonin transporter) via trace amine-associated receptor 1 (TAAR1), and by promoting release from synaptic vesicles through vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT2). This results in increased alertness, improved focus, reduced impulsivity in ADHD patients, and promotion of wakefulness in narcolepsy. It is available as tablets, extended-release capsules, oral solution, and transdermal patch[1][2][4][5].
