Overview

Dextrorphan (DXO) is a psychoactive drug of the morphinan class. It acts as an antitussive or cough suppressant and, at high doses, as a dissociative hallucinogen. Dextrorphan is the major active metabolite of dextromethorphan, produced by O-demethylation via CYP2D6. It is more potent than its parent compound as an NMDA receptor antagonist and has less activity as a serotonin reuptake inhibitor but retains norepinephrine reuptake inhibition. Dextrorphan also has higher affinity for opioid receptors than dextromethorphan at high doses[5]. The pharmacology of dextrorphan contributes to the psychoactive effects observed with excessive use of dextromethorphan-containing products.
