Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Dextrose 10% in water (D10W) is a sterile, non-pyrogenic intravenous solution containing dextrose monohydrate at a concentration of 100 mg/mL (i.e., 10 grams per 100 mL) dissolved in water for injection. It is primarily used as a source of carbohydrate calories and free water for patients who are unable to eat or drink adequately. The main clinical indications include the treatment of hypoglycemia (especially in diabetic emergencies), provision of calories during parenteral nutrition, and as part of fluid resuscitation protocols when additional glucose is required. Mechanistically, it rapidly increases blood glucose levels by providing exogenous glucose that can be immediately utilized by body tissues for energy production. It also serves as an osmotic diuretic and can help shift potassium into cells when administered with insulin[1][2][3][5][6][7].
