Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Dextrose 5% + Sodium Chloride 0.9% (often abbreviated as D5NS) is a sterile, nonpyrogenic intravenous crystalloid solution used for fluid and electrolyte replenishment and caloric supply. It consists of 5% dextrose (50 g/L) and 0.9% sodium chloride (9 g/L), providing approximately 170 calories per liter and 154 mEq/L each of sodium and chloride ions. The solution is indicated for patients requiring parenteral administration of water, electrolytes, and calories, particularly in the management of dehydration, sodium depletion, and as a maintenance fluid. It functions through simple physiological mechanisms to restore osmotic balance and provide metabolic energy rather than binding to specific protein targets.
