Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Dextrose 5% in 0.45% Sodium Chloride is a sterile, nonpyrogenic, hypertonic intravenous solution used for fluid and electrolyte replenishment and caloric supplementation. Each 100 mL contains 5 grams of dextrose monohydrate and 0.45 grams of sodium chloride, providing 77 mEq/L of sodium and chloride ions along with 170 kcal/L. Sodium is the principal cation of the extracellular fluid and is essential for maintaining water distribution and osmotic pressure, while dextrose serves as a readily available energy source. This solution is indicated for patients requiring parenteral hydration and caloric intake, particularly when there is a need for both water and electrolytes. It is marketed generically by various manufacturers, including Ives Drugs India.
