DFL is an experimental nanomedicine consisting of a folate-modified, prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA)-targeting nanoliposome loaded with the cytotoxic agent docetaxel. Developed for the precision treatment of prostate cancer, DFL leverages the high expression of PSMA on prostate malignancy cells to enhance tumor-specific drug delivery. The formulation is typically prepared via thin-film hydration-sonication. By utilizing folate as a targeting ligand, the nanoliposome facilitates receptor-mediated internalization into PSMA-positive cells, thereby increasing intracellular docetaxel concentrations while minimizing systemic toxicity. Preclinical evaluations in LNCaP xenograft models have demonstrated that DFL significantly inhibits tumor growth, induces apoptosis (evidenced by increased Caspase-3 and TUNEL staining), and reduces cell proliferation (Ki-67 expression) with a favorable safety profile.
