Overview

Di-Tan Decoction is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula developed in 1449 by the physician Dong Su. It is composed of nine herbal ingredients, with Arisaema (Tian Nan Xing) and Red Tangerine Peel (Ju Hong) as principal components. The formula belongs to the category of TCM formulas that dispel phlegm and is traditionally used to "resolve phlegm to open the orifices." In modern clinical practice, it has been used for conditions such as Alzheimer's disease and post-stroke neurological disorders including dysphagia. Its main actions are removing phlegm and opening sensory orifices according to TCM theory. Western medical research has explored its use in treating cognitive symptoms associated with Alzheimer's disease and improving swallowing function after stroke[1][4][5]. The mechanism of action from a biomedical perspective remains unclear but may involve neuroprotective effects or modulation of neurotransmitter systems.
