Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Dia-Artem is an oral fixed-dose combination antimalarial suspension containing artemether and lumefantrine, developed by Obsons Pharmaceuticals. It is indicated for the treatment of acute, uncomplicated malaria infections caused by Plasmodium falciparum, including multi-drug resistant strains. Artemether, a rapidly acting artemisinin derivative, is metabolized to dihydroartemisinin and works by generating toxic free radicals upon activation by heme iron, which alkylate and damage parasite proteins and lipids. It also inhibits the parasite's sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum calcium ATPase (PfATP6). Lumefantrine, a longer-acting synthetic fluorene derivative, prevents the detoxification of toxic free heme into non-toxic beta-hematin by complexing with hemin. Together, this combination provides rapid parasite clearance and prevents recrudescence.
