Diabecell

**Diabecell** is a cell therapy treatment consisting of encapsulated neonatal porcine (pig) islets transplanted into the peritoneal cavity of patients with type 1 diabetes. The encapsulation technology isolates the pig islets in alginate microcapsules, allowing them to secrete insulin in response to blood glucose levels while protecting them from the host immune system. This eliminates the need for immunosuppression in recipients. Diabecell is developed primarily as a therapy for patients with insulin-dependent diabetes, particularly those with hypoglycemic unawareness or difficult-to-control blood sugar. The treatment aims to normalize insulin needs, reduce hypoglycemic episodes, and lower insulin dosage. It was originally developed by Living Cell Technologies and is being further developed and commercialized in partnership/joint venture with Otsuka Pharmaceutical Factory and Diatranz Otsuka Limited[1][2][4][5][6][8][9].
