Overview

Dial antibacterial soap is a widely used over-the-counter antimicrobial cleansing product formulated for topical use. The primary active ingredient in current formulations of the bar soaps is benzalkonium chloride (0.10%), which acts as an antiseptic and disinfectant by disrupting microbial cell membranes and denaturing proteins, leading to bacterial cell death. This mechanism provides broad-spectrum activity against bacteria commonly encountered on the skin. The product is dermatologist tested and marketed as free from parabens, phthalates, silicones, SLS/SLES (sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate), and is certified cruelty-free under the Leaping Bunny Program. Historically developed by Armour and Company in 1948 with hexachlorophene as its original active ingredient (later replaced due to safety concerns), it has since evolved through several reformulations—most recently replacing triclocarban with benzalkonium chloride following regulatory changes[1][4]. It is primarily indicated for personal hygiene to reduce or eliminate bacteria on the skin.
