Diallyl disulfide is a naturally occurring organosulfur compound found in garlic (Allium sativum) and related plants. It is produced during the decomposition of allicin, another bioactive garlic component. Diallyl disulfide is a clear, yellowish liquid with a strong garlic odor and is insoluble in water but soluble in fats and oils. It has been studied for its diverse biological activities, including anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, cardiovascular protective, neuroprotective, hypolipidemic, antithrombotic effects and as an environmentally benign nematicide. Mechanistically, it acts as a thiol-dependent hydrogen sulfide (H2S) donor in biological systems and exerts anticancer effects by inducing apoptosis in tumor cells; activating metabolizing enzymes that detoxify carcinogens; inhibiting reactive oxygen species production; suppressing DNA adduct formation; regulating cell cycle arrest; and suppressing tumor metastasis[2][4][5][7]. Diallyl disulfide also modulates several proteins/enzymes involved in oxidative stress response.
