Dialysate is a cleansing fluid used in dialysis treatments for patients with kidney failure. It functions by drawing waste products and excess fluid from the blood. In peritoneal dialysis, dialysate flows through a catheter into the peritoneal cavity where the peritoneum acts as a filter, allowing waste products and excess fluid to pass from blood vessels into the solution. After a set dwell time, the fluid containing filtered waste is drained and discarded. In hemodialysis, dialysate works with the hemodialyzer to remove waste products from blood as it passes through the dialysis machine. The composition of dialysate can be adjusted based on patient needs, particularly regarding electrolyte levels such as potassium and magnesium.
