Overview

Diamthazole, also known as Dimazole, is an antifungal agent. It is an imidazole derivative that primarily acts by inhibiting the biosynthesis of ergosterol, a crucial component of fungal cell membranes. This disruption in ergosterol synthesis, along with effects on triglyceride and phospholipid synthesis, compromises the integrity and function of the fungal cell membrane. Additionally, it can lead to an intracellular accumulation of toxic hydrogen peroxide due to altered oxidative and peroxidative enzyme activities, contributing to cellular damage and necrosis. Diamthazole has also been observed to inhibit the transformation of Candida albicans blastospores into their invasive mycelial form. It has been used for research into infections, including cutaneous Trichophyton rubrum infection.
