Dianeal PD-2 is a sterile, non-pyrogenic peritoneal dialysis solution used for the treatment of chronic renal failure and end-stage renal disease. Developed and manufactured by Baxter, the solution is instilled into the peritoneal cavity, where the peritoneal membrane serves as a semi-permeable filter. The mechanism of action relies on two physical processes: osmosis and diffusion. Dextrose (glucose) in the solution creates an osmotic gradient that draws excess water from the blood into the dialysate, while concentration gradients facilitate the diffusion of metabolic waste products, such as urea and creatinine, out of the blood. The PD-2 formulation provides a specific electrolyte balance, including sodium, chloride, magnesium, and a calcium concentration of 3.5 mEq/L, with lactate serving as a bicarbonate precursor to correct metabolic acidosis.
