Overview
Diatrizoic acid (also known as amidotrizoate) is a high-osmolality iodinated radiocontrast agent. Developed and supplied as an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) by Laboratorios Juste, it is a small molecule organic iodine compound. Its mechanism of action involves the high atomic weight of iodine atoms, which absorb X-rays, thereby increasing the radiodensity of the tissues or cavities into which it is administered. This allows for the visualization of structures such as blood vessels, the gastrointestinal tract, and the urinary system during diagnostic procedures like angiography, urography, and computed tomography (CT). It has been in clinical use since the 1950s and is available in various salt forms, including meglumine and sodium salts.
